Do You Need a Music Licence to Play Your Own Music at Your Wedding in the UK?
The honest answer from someone who’s been asked this at almost every wedding they’ve ever worked.
I’m Steve, founder of Rock The House and a former professional wedding DJ with over 25 years of experience at weddings and events across North Wales and Mid Wales. In that time, I’ve been asked about music licences more times than I can count — and most couples are worrying about something they simply don’t need to worry about.
So let me clear this up once and for all.
The Short Answer
For weddings in the UK— whether you’re in a private garden, on private land, at a family home or in a marquee — you DO NOT need a music licence.
Here’s why.
What Are PRS and PPL?
PRS (Performing Right Society) and PPL (Phonographic Performance Limited) are the two organisations that collect royalties on behalf of songwriters and artists whenever their music is played publicly. Licensed venues — pubs, hotels, restaurants — pay an annual licence to cover this.
But a wedding is not a public event. It’s a private one. And that changes everything.
Private Weddings Are Exempt
PRS for Music has a clear policy on this: they do not charge for private family events such as wedding receptions, as long as:
- Guests are attending by personal invitation only
- There is no admission charge
- The organiser is not making a financial gain from the event
Every wedding I’ve ever worked fits those criteria. Your guests are invited. Nobody is paying to get in. You’re not running a business. That means no music licence is required — full stop.
This applies whether you’re in a barn, a marquee, a private estate, a village hall booked privately, or your mum and dad’s back garden. Official venues that are charging you to be there do have to have it, you do not!
What About Streaming Spotify?
Spotify and Apple Music are technically licensed for personal, private use — and a private wedding with invited guests is exactly that. In practice, streaming Spotify at your own private wedding reception is something hundreds of thousands of couples do every year across the UK without any legal issue whatsoever. Don’t let expensive wedding DJs fearing for their job tell you any different.
In fact, helping couples get the most out of Spotify at their wedding is something we do all the time at Rock The House. If you want to know how to set it up so it sounds professional all day and night, we’ve got a whole guide on that — How to Play Spotify at Your Wedding Without a DJ.
The Bottom Line
You don’t need a music licence for your wedding. What you do need is a sound system that’s loud enough for your guests to actually hear the music and speeches, set up properly so it sounds brilliant from the ceremony right through to the last dance.
That’s exactly what we do.
