How to Use Spotify for Your DIY Wedding Party: Tips from an Ex-Professional wedding DJ
As a former professional wedding DJ with well over 1000 successful weddings spanning 25 years, I know how crucial the right music is for creating the perfect atmosphere on your big day. Firstly using Spotify is no replacement for a great, professional wedding DJ but the problem is they can be expensive. So if funds are tight then this could be the answer for you as it’s growing in popularity. It’s definitely better than hiring an amateur Dj which, if they even turn up can easily ruin your vibe.

So you’re planning to use Spotify to set the mood, here’s a complete guide to help you get the best out of it.
Step 1: How to Create Your Wedding Playlist
1. Open Spotify:
Sign in to your account, or create one if you haven’t already (premium is crucial for ad-free listening, you can get 7 day free trial but be sure to cancel).
2. New Playlist:
Go to “Your Library,” click on “Playlists,” and hit “Create Playlist.” Name it something like “Wedding Party Playlist.” Browse the countless ready made playlists for inspiration, much easier than planning it all yourself.
3. Curate Your Music:
Think about key moments in your relationship and gather songs that resonate. Consider: – Ceremony: Songs for the processional and recessional. – Cocktail Hour: Chill tunes to set a relaxed vibe. – Reception: Upbeat tracks to get everyone dancing. – Special Dances: Slow songs for your first dance, father-daughter dance, etc.

Step 2: Create a Cohesive Experience
1. Organise by Sections:
Ceremony Music: Start with this first. – Cocktail Hour: Transition into laid-back tracks. – Dinner Music: Choose softer tunes for conversation. Use pre made lists for these, literally search “Cocktail Hour Playlists” etc and find one you like – Dance Floor: Save the bangers for this section, building energy gradually. Don’t go in hard too early, people need to warm up, my advice is start with stuff the older guests will get up to first, that everyone knows Motown, 70s, 80s etc, the older guests tend to leave earlier leaving you free to play what you want later on.
2. Mix Familiar and Unique Tracks:
Include crowd-pleasers alongside your personal favourites. This adds a special touch which is individual to you. Try to group genres or at least eras together, nothing clears a dance floor like an upbeat track going in to a slow one from a different era.
3. Special Moments:
Curate mini playlists for events like the cake cutting or bouquet toss and the final half hour. The final half hour should be music everyone knows and loves, this is all anyone will remember, if they enjoy the last 30 mins then they’ve enjoyed the night, the last 15 minutes should be sing-a-long hits that’s relevant to your era and vibe.
Make the last song at 11.55pm an upbeat one everyone knows, a dance anthem, an upbeat R&B classic or an Indie Banger. You do you!

Step 3: Remove Gaps Between Songs – Very important
1. Access Settings:
On desktop, click your profile pic in the top right and select “Settings.” – On mobile, tap your profile pick, top left, click “settings and privacy”.
2. Adjust Crossfade:
In the “Playback” section, find “Crossfade” and set it to 5 or 6 seconds and click . This will blend songs , remove gaps, maintaining energy and flow. Toggle Gapless Playback and Automix on too.

Step 4: Test Your Playlist
1. Listen Through:
Play the entire playlist in the car or at home to check transitions and flow. Adjust as needed.
2. Get Feedback:
Share it with a trusted friend for a fresh perspective but try not to get too much input from others or you’ll end up all over the place.
3. Download for Offline Use:
Save your playlist for offline listening to avoid any Wi-Fi issues on the day.

Step 5: Set Up for the Day
1. Reliable Device:
Use a fully charged smartphone or tablet, ideally one that you can leave to just do this job rather than your own phone, make sure it’s on silent or airplane mode and plug it in if possible.
2. Connect to Speakers:
With Rock The House, you’ll have access to professional-grade Bluetooth-enabled speakers and PA systems. Familiarise yourself with the setup and test it beforehand for the best sound quality, we’ll be on hand to help with this.
3. Designate a Music Manager:
Have a friend or family member keep an eye on the playlist and volume. This ensures smooth sailing while you enjoy your day. Hire a mic too so they can do your announcements like for the first dance or to say the evening food is ready.
